Call for Participants & IGLYO Advisory Panel

We are looking for 20 participants to join our IGLYO International LGBTQI Youth Conference on Hate Crime & Hate Speech on 8-13 November 2023 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, together with our local Member Organisation ŠKUC Magnus. The call below is divided in two parts: A call for participants, and an additional call to join our Advisory Panel (optional). You can also download both calls in PDF here.

Please read through both calls and fill out our application form by Sunday 30 July 2023 at 23:59 CEST to apply as a participant only, or both as a participant and Advisory Panel candidate. For any questions, please contact our Programmes Manager Viola (she) at viola@iglyo.com.

Call for participants

Hate speech and hate crime against LGBTQI individuals are rising across Europe, and often young people are the most vulnerable to it. For this reason, IGLYO included in its strategic plan the goal to provide evidence of LGBTQI young people’s experience of bias-motivated hate crime, hate speech and violence, and to develop guidelines for appropriate measures of prevention, reporting, and protection.

In line with this goal, IGLYO is organising an International Conference in Ljubljana (Slovenia) on 8-13 November 2023 on the topic of hate speech and hate crime. The conference will be organised in partnership with our Member Organisation ŠKUC Magnus. We will welcome 20 LGBTQI youth activists from around the Council of Europe countries to get together for four days of discussion, strategising, and preparing advocacy tools on the topic of hate speech and hate crime.

The conference will seek to improve awareness and knowledge of hate speech and hate crime, specifically as it relates to LGBTQI young people across Europe, and to increase the base of knowledge, as well as the capacity of young European LGBTQI activists on advocating for combating and mitigating hate speech, hate crime, and hate violence. One of the outcomes of this conference would be a set of guidelines to prevent and react to LGBTQI-phobic hate speech and hate crime.

Read the full call below and send us your application by Sunday 30 July 2023 at 23:59 CEST.

What are the objectives of the conference?

With this conference, IGLYO aims to:

  • Facilitate informative, skills-building, relevant workshops delivered by young LGBTQI activists and other experts on the topics of hate speech, hate crime, and hate violence. This will happen through a variety of mediums throughout the conference;
  • Provide a space for international, multicultural exchange and learning; this will happen formally in all sessions, specifically the networking sessions, as well as informally throughout the conference;
  • Collect and document the input and perspectives of a broad range of diverse youth on their experiences of hate speech, hate crime, and hate violence; this will happen through the guidelines working groups during the conference and in the advisory group that will meet after the conference ends.

How will the conference be organised?

The conference will take place from 8 to 13 November 2023 (the 8th is the arrival day and the 13th is the departure day). It will include expert lectures, peer-to-peer workshops and exchanges of good practices, networking, and group work to develop policy guidelines on the topic.

The conference will take place in English. Upon prior request, we can provide transcription services in English and/or ISL interpretation for D/deaf or hard of hearing individuals during workshops, meetings, and discussions included in the programme.

How much does it cost?

While the fee to participate in the conference is €50 per participant, IGLYO will cover all expenses related to your participation (travel, accommodation, and food).

IGLYO will be booking and providing accommodation for everyone who attends the event. However, you are expected to book and pay for your travel to the event and we will reimburse your travel costs up to €300 after the conference, as long as you comply with our reimbursement policy requirements.

Who can apply?

Applicants need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be an LGBTQI young person between 18-30 years old;
  • Be available to attend the conference in person from 8 to 13 November 2023;
  • Have a level of English allowing for full participation in an international conference;
  • Reside in a Council of Europe (CoE) Member State (see full list here).

IGLYO Member Organisations (see full list here) have priority in taking part in the conference if the demand is too high. If you're not affiliated with a Member Organisation, you are still more than welcome to apply, as long as you meet the above criteria.

If you want to go one step further and also contribute to the planning of the conference, have a look at the open call for the Advisory Panel further down the page.

IGLYO particularly welcomes applications from underrepresented groups and communities such as young women, trans youth (including non-binary), intersex youth, young people from Black communities, other communities of colour and ethnic minorities, refugees/migrants, sex workers, disabled youth (including neurodivergent youth), young people living with HIV, and fat young people.

How to apply?

Up for this adventure? Make sure to read the full call above, and send us your application through this application form by Sunday 30 July 2023 at 23:59 CEST. Selected participants will be contacted shortly after the deadline. For questions, please contact our Programmes Manager Viola (she) at viola@iglyo.com.
