Monkeypox Stigma Reduction Workshop

6 October 2022,
Online

Breaking stigma

In this interactive online dialogue, we delved into Monkeypox and the stigma that often comes with diseases capable of sexual transmission. Over the last few months, we had seen a dramatic rise in cases of Monkeypox in areas where Monkeypox had not historically been reported. One of the communities most affected by this was the gay, bisexual and MSM (men who have sex with men) community.

Sex workers and adult entertainers, particularly those identifying as LGBTQ+, are at the forefront of combatting Monkeypox. However, public health efforts have focused rather narrowly on the MSM community.

With this in mind, we collaborated with our partners and friends, the European Sex Workers Alliance (ESWA). Together, we explored the most up to date information on Monkeypox, heard from a representative of ESWA on the unique experience of sex workers, and tried to unpack and break stigma often associated with public health emergencies like this one.

Ahead of the workshop, we invited participants to check our list of trustworthy resources to keep informed on Monkeypox.
