IGLYO
Dear IGLYO Member Organisations,
In accordance to the IGLYO statutes [article 14] the Board of IGLYO hereby calls for the General Assembly to take place from the 7th to 8th of December 2012 (excluding arrivals on 6th December & departures on 9th December), in Mykolayiv, Ukraine.
We invite each IGLYO Member Organisation to nominate one delegate to take part in the meeting. All you need to do is to be officially nominated by your organisation and complete online registration form.
Please note that this invitation only applies for members of IGLYO who have received membership confirmation. If you are unsure about your organisation’s membership status, please contact us via members@iglyo.com.
This is the first time that IGLYO holds General Assembly outside of the European Union country. This comes with great excitement but also certain challenges and concerns. As you may know, Ukraine is one of the largest states in Europe, which obtained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite many endeavors of international communities to promote and inculcate tolerance towards LGBTQ people in this country, homo- and transphobic sentiments in Ukraine are rising. In the past twelve months, some members of Ukrainian parliament have attempted to introduce three different bills combating so-called “propaganda of homosexuality” to the agenda of the Supreme Rada (Parliament of Ukraine). In these conditions, Ukrainian society keeps remaining predominantly intolerant towards ideas of equality for LGBTQ individuals.
IGLYO and LiGA will take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of GA 2012 delegates. LiGA has good and long-term experience working with local police forces and Mykolayiv city administration.
This year, we have encountered certain difficulties in securing funds for the GA and are maintaining a deficit budget that might particularly affect its attendance. However, we are looking at things positive and seeking for possible ways out from this challenging situation. Some of them are mentioned in the document GA2012-03 – Technical note.
This time we also invite you to take part in the pre-GA event “Hate No More: The Off-Line Capacity Building Workshop for LGBTQ Young Activists on Combating Hate Speech On-Line”, which will take place on 5th-6th December (arrivals are expected on the 4th December), more information – GA2012-08 – CapacityBuildingWorkshop technical note&agenda).
