3rd December 2009, Edinburgh, Scotland
A lot is going in the first half of December: world leaders discuss the threat of climate change in Copenhagen, the 10th December is International Human Rights Day 2009, and 60 young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) activists gather in Edinburgh from the 10th to the 12th December for the General Assembly of IGLYO, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Youth and Student Organisation.
The IGLYO General Assembly 2009 will open at the Scottish Government on
the afternoon of Thursday 10th December, and is to be welcomed by the
Ministry for Equalities and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.
After the opening, a high-profile international panel will discuss the
theme Working for the human rights of LGBTQ youth: National, European
and global perspectives.
Later that day, the many international activists will mark
International Human Rights Day 2009 with an action in central
Edinburgh. This year the Human Rights Day 2009 will focus on
non-discrimination. IGLYO wants to acknowledge the fight against
discrimination which remains a daily struggle for millions around the
globe.
The overall aim of the IGLYO General Assembly 2009 will be for the 60
delegates present to discuss the topics within IGLYO's policy on
education, internal membership reform, and ways of strengthening the
LGBTQ youth and student movement in the next two years.
The IGLYO General Assembly 2009 has received exceptional support from
the European Commission's Education and Culture Directorate-General,
the Equality and Human Rights Commission (Scotland), the Scottish
Minister for Equalities, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Science and
Culture, Edinburgh City Council and the Edinburgh University Student
Association.
