European Youth Representatives call upon institutions to fight against homophobia

Representatives to the Council of Members of the European Youth Forum recall Human Right principles for gay / lesbian / bisexual / transgender people in their fight against discrimination demanding EU and CoE institutions to take actions against homophobia.
IGLYO Board (03/05/2006)

On Saturday, May 29th, 102 representatives of European Youth Organistations signed an extra-ordinary declaration after the new homophobic outbreak in Krakow, which happened the end of last week. Delegates to the Council of Europe of the European Youth Forum, whom were attending their Council of Members in Prato (Italy), signed a declaration in which they expressed their outrage about the happening.

The representatives demand the European Commission and the European Council to: "take actions against those Member States who violate fundamental Human Rights and fail to take the necessary measures to protect young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination."

Last Friday a right wing youth group with ties to the government of President Lech Kaczynski attacked marchers in a parade for tolerance in the southern city of Krakow. This new outbreak of homophobia was the direct reason for representatives of IGLYO, IFM/SEI and ECOSY to write this declaration.

The declaration also calls for the General Assembly of the United Nations to recognize the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on the 17th of May as an official calendar day. The recognition of this day would give a positive signal to those people suffering from discrimination based on their sexual and/or gender orientation.
