PRESENTATION
A recent IGLYO/ILGA-Europe report on LGBT youth in Europe found that over 61% of young LGBT people have already been discriminated against at school. Additionally, 53% have experienced bullying, and 42% found their curriculum discriminatory in some way. Whats wrong with our schools? How come that so many LGBT students express their uneasiness at school, where they spend a third of their lives? How can such an important institution fail to accomplish its mission of educating against prejudice and for diversity and Human Rights?
With European school student activists and European young LGBT activists coming together, OBESSU and IGLYO want to answer these questions. We believe the heart of the problem is socially exclusive educational policies, which (sometimes actively) promote prejudice and intolerance. Understanding, Developing and Implementing LGBT-inclusive Policies in European Secondary Schools promises to be a thrilling event, where participants from two backgrounds will gather and reflect on better policies for everyoneLGBT students as well as other students, and the ensemble of the school community. OBESSU and IGLYO will hold this joint study session as part of the Council of Europe campaign All Different, All Equal.
Some of the questions that will be raised on this study session are How do present policies fail to protect LGBT students?, What are the mechanisms of social exclusion?, How to tackle widespread discrimination?, How to produce LGBT-inclusive educational policies?, How to implement them?, and many more.
