LEBANON
Helem marked the first IDAHO in 2005 with a screening of the documentary "I Exist" at
the Monroe Hotel in Ain el Mreisseh. The film deals with the lives and struggles of gays and lesbians of Middle Eastern background living
in the United States. Over 200 people showed up for the screening and the discussions that took place afterwards. The discussion session
was the most fulfilling part of the whole event, with people standing up in front of a large crowd to tell of family pressures,
coming out stories, and give words of support and encouragement.
Owing to the success of last year's IDAHO , this year we plan to organize bigger and better. IDAHO Lebanon 2006 promises
to be a series of events to remember, with activities such as the launching of a locally authored book on homophobia, a
press conference, a media campaign, and film screenings of 6 locally produced films all dealing with homophobia.
