Call for participants to IGLYO conference "StopH8: tackling bullying in Europe"

IGLYO is delighted to announce the call for participants for the conference “Stop H8: Tackling  Bullying in Europe.” The conference will be held in Oslo, Norway from 10th  to 16th of May 2013 (inclusive of travel) in conjunction with IGLYO’s Member Organisation Skeiv Ungdom (Queer Youth Norway).
The conference has been kindly supported by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe.

Conference Objectives

The conference will explore the concept of bullying, as well as provide a forum to discuss personal experiences of bullying and formulate the strategies to tackle bullying in Europe.

In particular, participants of the conference will pursue the following objectives:
•    Gain understanding of the concept of bullying;
•    Identify forms, types and impact of bullying;
•    Gain knowledge of different strategies, practices, and actors that tackle homophobic and transphobic bullying in formal education settings;
•    Become equipped with tools to provide LGBTQ-specific strategies in their own country;
•    Formulate minimum standards to tackle homo/trans-phobic bullying.

Arrivals are expected during the day of May 10th , departures on May 16th 2013. *
*Participants are welcome to arrange their own accommodation to stay for Norwegian National Day on May 17th, given that the overall travel costs will not be higher that travel on the conference dates.

Participant profile

The ideal participant is:
•    New to learning about the topic of bullying, with non-expert knowledge;
•    Committed to developing competency to tackle homophobic and transphobic bullying in your own country;
•    Open to sharing personal experiences and learning from other participants;
•    Able to act as multipliers in their own community;
•    Active in the LGBTQ community in their country, with preference given to IGLYO Member Organisations;
•    Between 18 and 30 years of age;
•    Able to attend no less than 80% of the conference (priority given to applicants who can attend the full conference programme);
•    From a Council of Europe Member State, we may be able to offer a very limited number of places to participants from other countries;
•    Able to work in English.

IGLYO encourages applicants from all ethnic, cultural, and migrant backgrounds to apply, as well as all socio-economic situations, and of course, all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions.
The conference will be conducted in English. You do not need to be fluent in English, but please note that no translation will be provided.

Working Methods

IGLYO emphasizes a participatory approach to learning, utilizing non-formal education methods as promoted by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe, as well as other human rights education organisations. This conference will also contain a limited number of formal education sessions from outside resource persons, though the primary approach will be activity-based and participant centered.

Costs and practical arrangements

All accommodation and food will be provided by IGLYO with the support of Skeiv Ungdom. Travel expenses and visa costs will be reimbursed. Reimbursement will take place by bank transfer after the conference, upon presenting the receipts, tickets, etc. within an identified timeframe.

A participation fee of 30€ will be deducted from the reimbursement for participants coming from EU and EFTA Member States. IGLYO is aware of the various financial situations of LGBTQ youth organisations, so please do not hesitate to contact us if the participation fee is the only obstacle to your participation, we will be able to find a solution together.

Participants selection process

The preparatory team will review all complete applications. Participants will be selected upon the motivation and on how well they meet the criteria of the ideal participant profile above.

Successful applicants will be notified by email before 10th April 2013.
