About

Minority Azerbaijan

Minority Azerbaijan was established in 2015 as the first and only queer magazine in Azerbaijan. They have published 14 issues of the magazine, which focused on several topics from lesbian feminist to queer topics in politics in Azerbaijan, from bullying and discrimination to interviews with celebrities.

In 2018 Minority started to continue its activities as an NGO and a news website covering news and events from Azerbaijan and the world, interviews, videos, and produced a documentary about trans people.

As a queer rights activity, they contributed to Rainbow Maps and Annual Reviews of ILGA-Europe, and ILGA also refers to their website as the primary source for its reports. Minority Azerbaijan is one of the few places where community members can submit their pieces - research papers, interviews, opinion pieces.

Their mission

Minority Azerbaijan has been actively working to address the rights and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in a region where queer communities experience high levels of hatred and discrimination. This work is vital, especially in a region where LGBTQ+ issues are often marginalised or misunderstood.
